If you are attending college away from home, you will be driving back to school in the very near future. There are a lot of things to get done before you leave and one of them is making certain your car is safe and reliable before you go. That way you can avoid the hassles of dealing with a breakdown or finding a mechanic near your school. By following some basic automotive advice, all you college-bound students can make sure your car is road-worthy.
- Schedule an appointment to bring your vehicle in for a check-up well in advance of leaving. While it’s in the shop, have the oil and filter changed. During the appointment have the fuel and air filters replaced, the valves adjusted, spark plugs inspected/replaced, the tires rotated and balanced, and all the fluids topped off.
- If you know there are some old hoses and belts on your car, make sure they are replaced. These parts become dry and brittle over time, and if they fail, some can cause serious engine damage.
- Have the wiper blades changed, lights checked (and replaced, if needed), and cracked windshields fixed.
- Pack an Emergency Kit and keep it in the trunk of your vehicle in the event of a breakdown. Being prepared is always the best policy when traveling long distances. At a minimum, the kit should include a flashlight, rope, first-aid supplies, flares, a tire jack, and a spare tire. Paper towels and extra windshield washer fluid are also good items to include.
